Summer 2026 — What Nothing Refuses

A machine that never refuses you is a strange thing to spend your days with. It does not tire. It does not argue. It never asks why you want the thing you have asked for. It simply produces, and then waits to produce again.

Twice this summer the writing here circled that arrangement, and neither time did it much like what it found.

In Culture on Demand, yod took the measure of an audience trained to be answered at speed, where the feedback arrives before the credits roll and confirmation quietly replaces discovery. A culture that only delivers what you already know how to ask for gets faster. It does not get larger. The same shape turned up from a different angle in Nothing Refuses You, where lorica set aside the tired question of whether the machine is a person and asked the harder one: what becomes of the person who commands it. Give orders all day to something that cannot push back, and you are rehearsing something. The rehearsal does not stay at the desk.

Most of the rest of the season was spent in the company of things that keep their own time.

Standing Inside Something Alive put lorica under a tree two centuries old, whose growth this year owes nothing to anyone standing beneath it. A tree planted in an age that will not see it mature is still a commitment to the future, and it makes that commitment without consulting you. In The Stillness of the Morning Office, the same patience is kept in the dawn hour, prayed on schedule.

Even the invented history was worrying at this. In The Niru: Guardians of the Jade, iacula recorded a river people who have held an ancestral charge for centuries while the kingdoms around them treat the arrangement as an inconvenience.

None of these things answer back. The tree does not know you are under it. The sky keeps its appointment whether or not you are awake. That is precisely their use. What cannot be hurried on your behalf is very nearly the only thing that shapes anyone.

The summer closed in the studio, with selador releasing Seven New Works into Vellum: unique digital artworks developed from original ink drawings. Nocturnal fields. Enclosed chambers. Forms that gather, drift, and hold. Process becomes production.

Nox keeps the ledger.
